The United Kingdom hopes to reschedule a summit with the European Union after the summer to further normalize its relations with Brussels, in an international context deemed unstable. London's stated objective is to strengthen ties considered "of crucial importance" by the British authorities.
The UK's chief negotiator to the European Union, Nick Thomas-Symonds, indicated that discussions with Brussels remained positive despite the postponement of a summit initially scheduled for July 22. This postponement came after the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which temporarily disrupted the diplomatic calendar.
According to London, ongoing negotiations with the EU are progressing in several sensitive areas, including agri-food, the interconnection of emissions trading systems, and the establishment of a youth mobility program. These issues are considered cornerstones of future closer ties between the two parties.
Nick Thomas-Symonds stated in an interview that the technical discussions remained in a "very positive position" and that the priority was now to prepare for the implementation of any potential agreements at the next summit. Despite a tight political timetable linked to the transition at the head of the British government, both sides wish to maintain the momentum of the negotiations.
The United Kingdom is also seeking to convince public opinion of the benefits of enhanced cooperation with the European Union, in a political context still marked by tensions related to Brexit and the rise of Eurosceptic political forces.
This envisaged rapprochement is part of a broader strategy to "reset" relations between London and Brussels, aimed at stabilizing economic and political exchanges after several years of strained relations since the UK's departure from the European Union.
