A dark January for the Livret A savings account: savers are withdrawing more than they are depositing.

Bad news for the French people's favorite investment. According to data from the Caisse des dépôts communicated to franceinfo this Tuesday, the Livret A recorded a net outflow of 1,87 billion euros in January 2026, meaning that withdrawals exceeded deposits.

Life insurance benefits from this

This is the first time in ten years that a January has seen such a decline. The phenomenon is mainly due to the drop in the interest rate on the Livret A savings account, which fell from 1,7% to 1,5% on February 1st. Life insurance, considered more profitable, has broken records in 2025. Nevertheless, the Livret A remains in use by 58 million people, who have deposited nearly €450 billion into it.
