Representatives of professional firefighters say they received no concrete answers after their meeting with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on Thursday, August 13. The inter-union group believes the government is failing to address the current strain on departmental fire and rescue services.
All fire and rescue service (SDIS) personnel are called to strike on Thursday. Unions are raising concerns about staff shortages, the increasing number of callouts, and deteriorating working conditions. According to them, firefighters can no longer sustainably compensate for the system's shortcomings without additional personnel and funding.
Mass recruitment is being demanded
The inter-union group is calling for the adoption of a law to modernize civil defense, as well as significant recruitment of professional firefighters and technical and administrative staff. It is also demanding a budget that will better protect the physical and psychological health of personnel.
The trade unions are calling for the immediate opening of negotiations with the Ministry of the Interior, after fourteen years which they consider to have seen no significant progress. They are also demanding that their demands regarding pensions be taken into account in the next Social Security financing bill.
