A man was arrested on Saturday after climbing the Eiffel Tower and raising an American flag between the second and third floors of the monument in Paris. The incident led to the temporary evacuation of the plaza in front of the tower, as well as the second and third floors, while police responded.
Spotted around 15:45 p.m., the climber reached the third floor, where he was arrested. According to a police source, he offered no explanation for his actions. Taken into custody at the 7th arrondissement police station, he is being prosecuted for endangering the lives of others.
The American flag was removed by agents of the Intervention and Protection Group (GIP) of the Directorate of Public Order and Traffic (DOPC) of the Paris police prefecture.
This incident occurred on the day the United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia. The day before, the Eiffel Tower had been illuminated in the American colors in tribute to this anniversary.
