A man was shot dead in the street near Lyon: investigators are still searching for a motive

A man was shot and killed Friday evening in Vaulx-en-Velin, in the eastern suburbs of Lyon. The victim was in his car, parked in a working-class neighborhood, when one or more individuals opened fire from another vehicle. Hit in the chest, the man did not survive his injuries. The shooter or shooters immediately fled the scene.

The incident occurred around 23 p.m. near a large flea market. According to initial information from a source close to the investigation, the assailants' vehicle pulled alongside the victim's before shots were fired. At this time, the precise circumstances of the attack remain unclear, as do the identities of the victim and their assailant(s).

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of this homicide and, above all, to understand the motive. Investigators will need to establish whether the victim was specifically targeted and whether the shooter knew who he was. At this stage, no lead is being officially favored.

The specter of drug trafficking is already present in people's minds.

However, this case comes at a particularly tense time in the Lyon metropolitan area. Several towns in eastern Lyon regularly face settling of scores and violence linked to rivalries between criminal networks involved in drug trafficking. Vaulx-en-Velin is among the areas affected by this pressure.

The figures for 2026 illustrate the scale of the problem. At least six homicides linked to drug trafficking have been recorded in the Lyon metropolitan area since January, according to available data. However, it would be premature to automatically link Friday's murder to this series. Investigators have, at this stage, established no connection between this latest victim and drug networks.

This caution is all the more important given that the Lyon metropolitan area has also experienced other deadly acts of violence unrelated to drug trafficking. On May 11, three people with no connection to this world died in the arson attack on a building in Décines-Charpieu.

The murder in Vaulx-en-Velin adds another violent episode to a year already marked by several homicides in the greater metropolitan area. But beyond the statistics and the local context, the immediate challenge remains understanding what really happened Friday night. The investigation will now have to determine whether this assassination was a settling of scores, a personal conflict, or some other motive.
