A major security operation was launched Friday in Propriano, South Corsica, after a cache of weapons and explosives was discovered in the cellars of an apartment building. As a precaution, residents were temporarily evacuated while bomb disposal experts neutralized the devices found at the scene.
The operation, conducted by the Ajaccio gendarmerie's research section under the authority of the public prosecutor's office, concerns violations of weapons legislation. According to initial reports, recent military-grade weapons, grenades, and explosive devices were seized. One person, described as a resident of the building, was taken into custody.
Suspected links with local organized crime
According to sources close to the investigation, the discovered material does not appear to be part of a private collection but could be linked to a criminal organization active in the region. The man arrested is believed to be close to individuals already convicted in a case involving bomb attacks in Propriano and currently on trial in a separate arms trafficking case involving Corsica and several European countries.
The investigation continues to determine the origin and destination of this arsenal. Authorities have not yet specified whether further arrests are planned, but the security perimeter remained in place around the building for several hours.
