A violent explosion occurred Friday morning at the Montebello distillery, located in Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe. The accident, caused by a boiler explosion, left five people seriously injured, according to initial reports from emergency services.
The explosion occurred around 8:30 a.m. (local time) while the distillery was in full operation. The victims suffered severe burns and fractures. One person, who had suffered a cardiac arrest, was resuscitated by emergency services before being transported to a hospital. Twelve other people present at the site were treated for shock, but were not physically injured.
A crisis unit has been set up.
Around twenty firefighters were mobilized to secure the site and assist the victims. The explosion did not cause a fire, but it led to the immediate shutdown of the distillery. A psychological support unit was also set up for employees and those present at the time of the incident.
Founded in 1930, the Montebello distillery is one of the oldest in Guadeloupe and produces the rum of the same name. Local authorities visited the site to assess the consequences of the accident, while an investigation will determine the exact causes of the explosion at the industrial facility.
