Convoys of tractors towing large tankers have headed towards the Gironde region. Faced with the spreading fire and the considerable needs of the emergency services, farmers are mobilizing to transport water and make their equipment available to firefighters. Images released this weekend show several convoys traveling on the main roads leading to the Bordeaux area. The farm vehicles, with their tankers attached, are moving one after another through the traffic. Some of these reinforcements come from Lot-et-Garonne, where an appeal was launched to farmers with suitable equipment. Some farmers left the department as early as Friday evening, while other groups were ready to depart.
Thousands of liters of water delivered as close as possible to the fire
Water tankers allow for the creation of mobile reserves in areas where water sources are remote or difficult to access. They can supply firefighting vehicles, quickly deliver water to forest tracks, or dampen certain areas to slow the spread of flames. These tanks, usually used for agricultural work, can carry several thousand liters per trip. Their presence reduces the need for fire trucks to travel to hydrants or reservoirs located outside the operational zone. However, farmers are not sent to face the flames alone. Their movements and the use of equipment must be directed towards emergency services. The public is urged not to go to evacuated or closed areas without authorization.
Agricultural machinery requisitioned to open passages
Farmers with powerful tractors, blades, excavators, bulldozers, or tillage equipment were also asked to indicate their availability. This equipment can be used to clear access roads, remove vegetation, or create firebreaks in wooded areas. These firebreaks are intended to prevent the flames from spreading further and facilitate the passage of emergency vehicles. Farmers also have detailed knowledge of the roads, tracks, ditches, and water sources in their area. Volunteers provide their location, availability, and the exact type of equipment they have so they can be directed to the areas where their help is needed.
An exceptional mobilization around Bordeaux
The situation remains extremely tense this Sunday. Overnight, the fire intensified again and spread erratically towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area. More than 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, nearly 1,200 police officers and gendarmes, as well as 450 volunteers, are now deployed in the Gironde department. Eighteen aircraft and an A400M military transport plane are supporting ground operations. The fire has already ravaged approximately 42,000 hectares. More than 220,000 people have been evacuated since the start of the blaze. The fire front is several dozen kilometers from Bordeaux, but the evacuation of the city is not being considered at this stage. While firefighters continue their round-the-clock battle, agricultural convoys are now reinforcing the logistical support. Tanks, tractors and earthmoving equipment are directed to the sectors designated by the rescue services, with an immediate priority: to guarantee the water supply and prevent the fire from gaining more ground.
