While nearly 200,000 people have been evacuated in Gironde and Landes, another tragedy is unfolding in the heart forests ravaged by flames. Thousands of wild animals are trying to flee burning mountains, engulfed in smoke and traversed by extremely fast-moving fire fronts.
On Saturday, the fire that started in Saumos had ravaged 32,700 hectares, according to the midday count, while 40,000 hectares had been burned across the Gironde department. Approximately 140 houses had been destroyed and 167,000 people evacuated in the department. In the Landes department, the Biscarrosse fire had also forced 30,000 people to flee and destroyed over a hundred buildings. Beyond these human and material figures, no organized evacuation is possible for the deer, wild boar, foxes, squirrels, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and countless insects present in the affected areas.
Panicked animals driven towards roads and towns
Mammals capable of running generally try to move away from the fire front. However, the rapid advance of the flames, changes in wind direction, and the thickness of the smoke can disorient them. Some find themselves driven toward roads, fences, urban areas, or areas already surrounded by fires. Wild animals may thus suddenly cross roads or approach houses. This flight increases the risk of collisions with vehicles, exhaustion, and injury. Forest fences, wire mesh fences, roads, and housing developments all present additional obstacles.
Heat is not the only danger. Inhaling smoke can cause respiratory distress, while stress and prolonged running lead to severe dehydration. Even when an animal escapes the flames directly, it may succumb several hours or days later.
Reptiles, amphibians and small mammals on the front line
Less mobile species have far fewer options. Hedgehogs, lizards, snakes, frogs, small rodents, and many invertebrates can be caught off guard in their shelters or unable to travel far enough before the fire arrives. Animals living in burrows are not always protected. When the fire is intense, the heat penetrates the topsoil, and smoke can fill cavities. Young animals, being slower and less experienced, are also particularly vulnerable. Adult birds can usually take flight, but smoke and heat disrupt their movements. Eggs, nestlings still in the nest, and injured individuals have no way to escape. Fires also destroy trees used for nesting, feeding, or shelter. The effects on some sensitive species can be considerable. In previous fires, protected reptile populations were directly affected by the destruction of their natural habitat.
A mortality rate impossible to measure immediately
No precise figures are yet available regarding animal mortality caused by the fires in southwestern France. Emergency services remain focused on protecting residents, homes, and infrastructure. Vast areas remain dangerous or inaccessible. The census of dead animals cannot begin until the burned areas are secured and the ground has cooled. Even then, the count will necessarily be incomplete. Many carcasses are completely burned, hidden under vegetation, or quickly taken by predators and scavengers. Insects and other small organisms represent a significant portion of this mortality, but their loss is virtually impossible to quantify. Yet, they play a central role in pollination, the decomposition of organic matter, and the feeding of birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
The survivors faced a forest without food or shelter
For animals that manage to escape the flames, the danger doesn't disappear with the fire. A burned forest no longer provides the same resources. Water sources may be contaminated by ash, edible plants have disappeared, and hollow trees used for shelter or breeding are destroyed. Survivors must then travel long distances to find new territory. This sudden concentration of animals in the unaffected areas intensifies competition for food and shelter. It can also increase their use of roads and their proximity to inhabited areas. The destruction and fragmentation of habitats also isolate certain animal populations. Natural corridors that allowed movement between different forest areas can disappear, forcing species to cross much more dangerous urbanized or agricultural spaces. Fires destroy fauna, flora, and the habitats necessary for their life cycle.
Dogs, cats, horses and livestock evacuated urgently
Domestic animals and livestock are also at risk. Faced with an immediate evacuation order, residents must leave their homes within minutes with their dogs and cats. Some frightened animals hide or refuse to enter a transport cage, making their rescue extremely difficult. Moving horses, cattle, sheep, or animals at equestrian centers requires suitable vehicles, personnel, and available shelters. When a fire is spreading rapidly, owners do not always have the time to organize these transfers. Animals left in gardens, fields, or farm buildings can also suffer from smoke inhalation without being directly exposed to the flames. Respiratory injuries, stress, burns, and water contamination sometimes require treatment for several days after evacuation.
An ecological disaster whose full impact will take months to assess
The fires in southwestern France are devastating entire ecosystems, from large mammals to soil-dwelling insects. The consequences will become apparent gradually, as specialists return to the burned areas and compare animal populations with those observed before the fires. Vegetation will eventually regrow in some of the affected areas, but the return of a complete forest habitat will take years. Some mobile species may recolonize the burned areas. Others, already weakened or dependent on a very specific environment, risk local extinction. While firefighters continue their battle to protect communities and prevent the flames from reaching new towns, a massive animal and ecological catastrophe is unfolding far from the cameras, in forests now reduced to ashes.
