One person remained missing Tuesday evening in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, Haute-Savoie, after being swept away by the waters of the Giffre River. The river suddenly burst its banks following a violent storm accompanied by heavy rainfall.
The search conducted by firefighters has not yet located the victim. The operation is now being led by the national gendarmerie. More than fifty firefighters have been mobilized in this Alpine village near Samoëns.
Fifteen people evacuated by air
A mudslide occurred simultaneously in the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, a popular natural site during the summer season. Fifteen people, including two babies, had to be evacuated by Civil Security helicopters.
Around 170 people had also been sheltered in a restaurant due to the road conditions. After the blocked road was cleared, they were allowed to return to their accommodations. Emergency services remain on alert, however, due to the risk of further flooding or landslides in the area.
