Murder in the Vosges: an arms trafficking operation allegedly turned into a settling of scores

A man has been charged with murder after the body of Alain Chantaduc was discovered on June 28 in a forest near Éloyes, in the Vosges region. The 77-year-old victim had multiple stab wounds and his body had been partially burned. An autopsy and DNA analysis allowed investigators to quickly establish his identity. Alain Chantaduc was known to the police and had spent more than 25 years in prison. He had notably been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1991 murder of a 19-year-old auxiliary gendarme who had intervened after a robbery in Toulouse. According to the Épinal prosecutor's office, the septuagenarian remained involved in arms and ammunition trafficking. The investigation led the police to identify the last person with whom he was believed to have been in contact and who had traveled to Éloyes on the day of his death.

A confession after a murder committed in moments

The suspect, described as an acquaintance of the victim and with several prior convictions for armed robbery, was arrested Tuesday by the Nancy Criminal Investigation Department. Taken into custody, he reportedly confessed to killing Alain Chantaduc at the very spot where the body was later found. According to his statements, as reported by the prosecutor, the events unfolded very quickly following a dispute related to arms trafficking. The investigation will now have to verify this version of events, clarify the motive, and determine whether the act was premeditated. The man has been formally charged with murder as a repeat offender and desecration of a corpse, and then placed in pretrial detention. This charge implies that the magistrates are considering, at this stage of the proceedings, the hypothesis of premeditated homicide. The suspect remains presumed innocent until his eventual trial.
