A man suspected of using the identity of a Lyon student for several years during SNCF ticket checks was arrested Tuesday in Vienne, Isère. According to initial findings of the investigation, he presented himself under his victim's name when traveling without a ticket, leaving the victim to deal with the fines and collection procedures.
For several years, the young man whose identity had been stolen faced a series of fines, administrative seizures, and legal proceedings to try to prove his innocence. The amounts claimed reached several thousand euros and caused numerous administrative and financial complications.
Fraud detected thanks to an SNCF alert
Faced with repeated reports, SNCF had implemented a system to monitor the victim's identity. During a check carried out on Tuesday in Vienne, agents detected the use of the reported name and immediately contacted the railway police. The suspect was then handed over to investigators.
The investigation revealed that the man allegedly used several different identities to avoid paying for his rides. Another victim has already been identified in the Dijon area. Taken into custody, the suspect admitted to some of the offenses related to approximately thirty tickets. He is scheduled to appear in court in November for a plea bargain hearing. Investigators are now working to determine the full extent of the fraud and identify any other potential victims.
