The US president has signed an executive order imposing a 15% tariff on imported products made from polysilicon, a key raw material in the production of microprocessors and solar panels. The measure will take effect on December 4.
Polysilicon is at the heart of a new trade offensive by Washington against Beijing. Donald Trump has ordered the imposition of a 15% tariff on imports of products containing this material, which is used extensively in the manufacture of semiconductors and photovoltaic cells. China is the world's leading producer.
The stated objective is to strengthen American supply chains in two sectors deemed strategic: artificial intelligence, which relies on large quantities of electronic chips, and the energy transition, driven in particular by the deployment of solar panels. Washington intends to reduce its dependence on Beijing in these sectors.
The tax will take effect on December 4th. It is in line with the protectionist policy pursued by the Trump administration, which is multiplying tariff levers to force manufacturers to relocate or secure their supplies on American soil.
