Marine Tondelier nominated as EELV candidate for 2027 after a massive internal vote

Marine Tondelier has been overwhelmingly chosen by environmental activists to represent the Greens in the left-wing primary for the 2027 presidential election. At 39, the party's national secretary garnered 86% of the vote in this internal election, where she faced Waleed Mouhali, a local elected official from the Hauts-de-Seine department. She immediately announced her candidacy on social media, thanking activists for their support and stating that her campaign would begin this Monday, targeting those affected by the proposed budget bill.

An endorsed candidacy and an invisible primary

Marine Tondelier emphasizes the need for a climate of responsibility and unity, asserting that the current period demands humility and cohesion in the face of the rise of the far right. She repeatedly reiterates that nothing can be achieved without collective effort, and that her slogan, "Hold on, we're coming," aims to both galvanize and reassure a fragmented electorate. Despite her calm and largely consensual nomination, the upcoming left-wing primary is far from certain. While the Socialist Party (PS), the Greens, Génération.s, as well as François Ruffin and Clémentine Autain, are willing to participate, other major players such as Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Raphaël Glucksmann, and the French Communist Party (PCF) are currently refusing to commit.

The Green Party leader nevertheless insists that she will trust left-wing voters to decide between the candidates, while also calling for the broadest possible unity. She plans to increase her travels in the coming weeks, particularly to reach out to those affected by the ongoing budget negotiations in Parliament. Since taking over the party leadership in 2022, Marine Tondelier has established herself as one of the leading voices of the Green movement, advocating for unity while attempting to bring peace to a party often divided.
