Left-wing primary: the agreement between the Socialist Party and Glucksmann still pending a vote

The Socialist Party and Place Publique are expected to finalize the details of their primary for the 2027 presidential election this Tuesday evening. The agreement will be submitted to the National Council of the Socialist Party and to the National Political Assembly of the party led by Raphaël Glucksmann.

The electronic single-member constituency election will be held in two rounds. The first round will take place on October 9 and 10, and the second on October 16 and 17. Candidates must officially submit their applications between September 1 and 15.

Four candidates already in the race

Raphaël Glucksmann, Socialist MPs Philippe Brun and Jérôme Guedj, and Ségolène Royal have already announced their intention to participate. Olivier Faure, the Socialist Party's first secretary, has not yet revealed his decision. Emmanuel Maurel's Republican and Socialist Left may also join the process.

To be admitted, candidates must gather endorsements from various members of the Socialist Party's National Council, parliamentarians, local elected officials, or mayors. This system is designed to eliminate purely symbolic candidacies while opening the competition to candidates beyond just the leaders of the two organizing parties.

The 15 euros requested from voters is causing controversy

Members with up-to-date dues will be able to vote, as will those who join one of the two parties. Supporters who do not wish to join a party can make a contribution to a structure specifically created to finance the election. The contribution will be set at €15, or €10 for those with low incomes.

This fee is contested by Philippe Brun, Ségolène Royal, and several Socialist Party leaders, who fear it will reduce voter turnout. Another point of contention remains with La France Insoumise (LFI). The Socialist Party (PS) secured an agreement that the joint charter does not explicitly exclude a future legislative alliance with LFI, contrary to Raphaël Glucksmann's wishes. Behind the technical organization of the primary, therefore, lies the political line of the candidate who will represent the social-democratic left in 2027.
