As the number of electric vehicles continues to grow in France, charging station pricing is raising increasing questions among drivers. In a study published this Thursday, the consumer association Que Choisir Ensemble denounces a lack of transparency in pricing on public charging networks, with differences of up to 500% for the same charge depending on the app or charging card used.
A study conducted between April 1st and 21st on 121 charging points and eight mobility operators shows significant price differences. In Langres, at a charging station located along the N19, for example, the price varied from €0,30 to €1,78 per kWh depending on the payment method chosen.
A rapidly growing network, but still considered insufficient.
The association also criticizes the frequent lack of clear price displays, the absence of direct payment by bank card, and an incomplete list of available charging stations. According to them, consumers cannot anticipate their bill or easily compare the offers available.
Que Choisir Ensemble also highlights the difficulties encountered in multi-family housing. Nearly half of French people live in apartments, but only 6% of buildings with parking are currently equipped with charging stations.
Despite these criticisms, the French network continues to progress rapidly. By the end of 2025, France had nearly 2,9 million charging points, of which approximately 185.500 were publicly accessible. According to the association, the target of 400.000 public charging points by 2030 remains achievable at the current rate of deployment.
