French tech startup Mistral AI has announced a €3 billion funding round, the largest ever raised by a private European technology company. This transaction brings its valuation to approximately €21 billion, compared to €11,7 billion a year earlier, and reinforces its position as Europe's leading hope in the face of American and Chinese artificial intelligence giants.
The funding round was co-led by Samsung Electronics, investor PSG Equity, and the European Union-backed Scaleup Europe fund. ASML, BlackRock, Advent, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were also among the participants. Microsoft, despite being a partner of Mistral in technology infrastructure, reportedly did not invest in this latest round.
Accelerate models and computing capabilities
Mistral will use this capital to fund its research, train more advanced artificial intelligence models, and strengthen its IT infrastructure. Founded in 2023, the French company focuses in particular on open and customizable models that client companies can adapt and use on their own equipment to maintain greater control over their data.
The startup now boasts over 125 clients and hopes to reach $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026. Despite this spectacular growth, Mistral still faces competition from American companies with significantly greater financial resources. This record funding round, however, provides the necessary resources to accelerate its development in Europe , Asia, and North America, while strengthening its role in European digital sovereignty.
