Reims: A 37-year-old man shot dead; a murder investigation has been opened.

A 37-year-old man died overnight Wednesday to Thursday after being seriously wounded by a gunshot in Reims. The public prosecutor's office has opened a murder investigation, focusing on the theory of a drug-related settling of scores.

Emergency services arrived shortly before 23 p.m. after discovering the victim, who had been shot multiple times. Rushed to the Reims hospital in critical condition, the man succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, around 4 a.m.

The drug trafficking angle is the preferred hypothesis.

According to the Reims public prosecutor, François Schneider, the victim was "very well known" to the police and the justice system. Initial findings of the investigation suggest that this homicide is "very likely" linked to drug trafficking.

This new case comes amid a rise in drug-related violence in several French cities, where rivalries between criminal networks regularly lead to armed score-settling.

The authors are still wanted.

The investigation has been entrusted to the Interdepartmental Judicial Police Service (SIPJ) of Reims, which is responsible for identifying the exact circumstances of the events and finding the perpetrator(s) of the shooting.

At this stage, no suspects have been apprehended. The investigation is ongoing to determine the precise motive for the attack and any potential involvement within local criminal networks.
