Setback for Trump: The House of Representatives adopts aid to Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia

In a vote highlighting divisions within the Republican Party, the US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill providing new aid to Ukraine and additional sanctions against Russia. This legislation represents a political setback for the US president. Donald Trump, several of whose allies opposed this initiative.

The bill passed by a vote of 226 to 195 after months of gridlock in Congress. Its passage was made possible by a coalition of Democrats and a group of Republicans who defied their own party leadership to force a vote.

The text provides for renewed support for Ukraine, which has been engaged in a conflict with Russia for several years, as well as the strengthening of sanctions against Moscow. Supporters of the measure believe it is necessary to maintain pressure on the Kremlin and bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.

The vote reflects the persistent divisions within the Republican camp regarding American foreign policy. While Donald Trump and several of his close associates advocate a more cautious approach to aid to Ukraine, other members of the party believe that withdrawing American support would weaken Washington's strategic position vis-à-vis Russia.

To circumvent opposition from Republican leaders in the House, several conservative lawmakers joined forces with Democrats to launch an exceptional parliamentary procedure to force a vote on the bill. This move illustrates the intensity of the debate currently gripping Congress on the Ukraine issue.

The bill's future now depends on its legislative journey through the Senate and the White House's position. Regardless, this vote marks yet another demonstration of the independence of certain Republican lawmakers from Donald Trump on one of the most sensitive international issues of the moment.
