Plaza Athénée robbery: two suspects to be tried in January after a theft estimated at one million euros

Two men suspected of participating in the burglary of a room at the prestigious Plaza Athénée hotel, located on Avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement of Paris , will stand trial on January 13, 2027. Initially scheduled for Friday, November 6, as part of an expedited hearing, their case was ultimately postponed. The two suspects, both in their thirties, were arrested a few days earlier following an investigation by the Brigade for the Repression of Banditry (BRB). They are suspected of having participated in a spectacular robbery committed in early September at one of the capital's most luxurious establishments. The victim's reported losses are estimated at nearly one million euros, notably due to the disappearance of a valuable watch.

The incident dates back to the night of September 9, 2026. Two burglars reportedly gained entry to the establishment by scaling its facade before accessing a seventh-floor room through an open window. Inside was Oumar Gambi, a Malian businessman known as "OG," notably for his lavish lifestyle flaunted on social media. The intruders allegedly stole several valuables before fleeing across the rooftops. Among the items reported stolen were a Richard Mille watch valued at €636,000, as well as jewelry. The scale of the haul and the circumstances of the break-in led investigators to consider the possibility of a pre-planned operation, although this hypothesis could not be definitively proven.

An investigation based on CCTV footage and telephone data

The investigation by the Anti-Gang Brigade led to the identification of two suspects through the use of CCTV footage and the analysis of telephone data. Investigators sought to reconstruct the movements of individuals suspected of participating in the burglary, as well as the circumstances of their arrival at the hotel. The two men arrested, already known to the police according to press reports, denied the charges during their detention. Their court appearance was initially intended to allow for a swift trial, but the postponement of the hearing until January now provides more time for the preparation of the case and the defense's arguments. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case has attracted particular attention due to the reputation of the Plaza Athénée, an iconic Parisian luxury hotel frequented by a wealthy international clientele. The modus operandi described by investigators raises questions about room security and the protection of valuable personal belongings. However, it is not sufficient on its own to conclude that the hotel was negligent or that there was internal complicity. The trial, scheduled for January 13, will notably examine the physical evidence gathered during the investigation, the exact circumstances of the break-in, and the possible involvement of the two men being prosecuted. For the victim, the question also remains: what will become of the stolen items, whose declared value places this burglary among the most significant luxury thefts that have occurred recently in the capital?
