A Palestinian-American citizen was killed and another injured in a violent attack overnight Thursday to Friday in Sinjil, a town north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Sayafollah Musallet, also known as Saif, 20, was fatally beaten by Israeli settlers. Hussein Al-Shalabi, 23, was reportedly shot in the chest during the same incident.
Musallet's family, from Tampa, Florida, said it took three hours for rescuers to reach him, with his brother eventually managing to carry him to an ambulance. Sadly, Saif died before reaching the hospital. "This is an unimaginable nightmare and an injustice no family should ever have to face," the family said in a statement. They called on the US State Department to launch an immediate investigation and hold those responsible for the attack accountable.
The US State Department simply confirmed that it was aware of the incident, without commenting further, citing respect for the family's privacy. For its part, the Israeli army announced that it had opened an investigation, specifying that clashes had erupted after Palestinians threw stones at Israelis, slightly injuring some of them. Israeli forces were dispatched to the scene and used so-called "non-lethal" means to disperse the crowd.
This episode is part of a continuing escalation of violence in the West Bank, exacerbated by the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which began in late 2023. Human rights groups report a significant increase in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians since the beginning of the conflict. At the same time, the Israeli military has stepped up its security operations in the West Bank, while Palestinian attacks have also claimed the lives of several Israeli civilians in recent years.
Tensions remain particularly high in the occupied territories, where the increase in acts of violence is raising fears of a regional conflagration. The death of Sayafollah Musallet, a young American man of Palestinian origin, threatens to send a new wave of shockwaves, both diplomatically and in international public opinion.
