Washington hits Iranian cryptocurrencies: four major platforms targeted by new sanctions

The United States announced a new round of sanctions against Iran on Tuesday, this time targeting the cryptocurrency sector. The U.S. Treasury Department added several individuals and digital asset exchanges to its sanctions list, increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

According to a notice published by the Treasury, four Iranian nationals and four major cryptocurrency exchanges based in Iran have been sanctioned. The companies targeted are Nobitex, Bitpin, Ramzinex, and Wallex.

This decision is part of Washington's sanctions policy against Iran, which aims to limit the country's sources of funding and restrict its access to international financial markets. Cryptocurrencies have been closely monitored by US authorities for several years, who fear they could be used to circumvent economic restrictions.

US sanctions typically involve freezing any assets held in the United States by the individuals or entities concerned. They also prohibit US citizens and businesses from conducting transactions with the targeted entities.

The announcement comes amid persistent tensions between Washington and Tehran. Despite diplomatic talks aimed at reducing clashes in the region, relations between the two countries remain deeply strained, and economic measures continue to be one of the main instruments of pressure used by the United States.

Cryptocurrency platforms are playing an increasingly important role in the Iranian economy, particularly due to the country's difficulties in accessing the global financial system. The new sanctions could further complicate their operations and increase Iran's financial isolation.
