Clashes broke out in Geneva on Sunday during a protest against the G7 summit to be held in France. Swiss police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had headed towards the international organizations district.
According to a Reuters witness, several hundred people participated in the rally organized to denounce the policies of the G7 countries. The demonstration took place in a tense atmosphere near the United Nations buildings in Geneva.
During the incidents, some protesters threw stones at a UN telecommunications building. Flares were also fired as law enforcement tried to prevent participants from accessing the site.
In response to escalating tensions, Swiss police intervened, using tear gas to disperse protesters and secure the area around the international facilities. Authorities did not immediately release any information regarding potential injuries or arrests.
The demonstrations are taking place on the eve of the G7 summit being held across the border in France. As with previous international summits, several activist organizations have called for rallies to denounce the economic, climate, and security policies advocated by major Western powers.
Swiss authorities have reinforced security measures around international buildings in Geneva due to the proximity of the summit and the presence of numerous diplomatic institutions in the city. Law enforcement remains on high alert to prevent any further disturbances in the hours leading up to the opening of the G7 leaders' meeting.
