Italian authorities have announced the arrest of seven people suspected of belonging to an anarchist militant network involved in acts of sabotage targeting the high-speed rail network during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics last February.
In a statement released Tuesday, Italian police indicated that a judge had ordered the detention of five suspects, while two others were placed under house arrest. Those targeted face particularly serious charges, including terrorist association and subversion of democratic order.
According to investigators, two of the individuals arrested allegedly participated directly in an attack carried out on February 14 against the high-speed rail line linking Rome to Florence. This infrastructure is one of the busiest routes in the country.
Police say the sabotage was carried out using improvised explosive devices. Damage to the railway infrastructure is estimated at around €455,000, or nearly $528,000, according to authorities.
The attack occurred while Italy was hosting the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, held from February 6 to 22. The disruptions caused by the sabotage resulted in delays of more than an hour on several train lines, affecting many travelers during the Olympic period.
The arrests mark a new stage in the investigation led by Italian security services to identify those responsible for this operation. Authorities are now seeking to determine the extent of the alleged network and any possible links between the suspects and other actions claimed by anarchist groups in the country.
