The president of the Senegalese parliament resigns after the dismissal of the government

The president of Senegal's National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye, announced his resignation on Sunday, deepening the political crisis that has gripped the country two days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dissolved the government.

An influential figure in the ruling PASTEF party, Ndiaye stated that his departure was a personal decision made in "the best interests of the nation".

On Friday, President Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved his government after several months of growing tensions between the two allies, who came to power together in 2024.

According to Reuters, relations between Faye and Sonko have deteriorated in a context of economic difficulties, marked in particular by rising debt and the international consequences of the war against Iran.

Senegalese MPs are due to meet on Tuesday to vote on a possible reinstatement of Ousmane Sonko as an MP and to elect a new president of the National Assembly to replace Ndiaye.

This prospect is already drawing criticism from the opposition and some legal experts, who believe that Sonko's reinstatement could be contrary to parliamentary rules, as he has never officially served as a member of parliament.
