"It was disappointing": The European Union criticizes the ineffectiveness of the latest global climate summits

European climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra stated on Monday that recent UN climate summits had not produced the necessary results to address the climate emergency. According to him, the progress achieved in recent years remains largely insufficient in light of scientific recommendations.

Speaking at an event in Brussels, Wopke Hoekstra said that the goals achieved at most recent international climate conferences were far from the level of ambition required to effectively combat global warming.

The European official emphasized that when comparing the decisions adopted at the COPs with the efforts scientists deem essential, the results appear disappointing. According to him, the commitments made over the past five to eight years have failed to bridge the gap between political promises and the planet's actual needs.

The Conferences of the Parties, better known as COPs, bring together each year the States that have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They are considered the main international negotiations aimed at coordinating the fight against climate change.

Despite several major agreements reached in recent years, many experts believe that global greenhouse gas emissions are decreasing too slowly to meet the targets set by the Paris Agreement. Scientists regularly warn of the need to accelerate the energy transition and further reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Wopke Hoekstra's statements illustrate growing concerns within the European Union about the pace of progress globally. Brussels is seeking to maintain pressure on major economies to strengthen their climate commitments in upcoming international negotiations.

With upcoming diplomatic meetings on climate just months away, these criticisms reflect the growing frustration among some political leaders over the persistent gap between stated ambitions and concrete actions implemented.
