France is facing a double weather event this Friday, July 31st. Météo-France has placed ten departments in the Centre and East on orange alert for thunderstorms from 14 pm, while 21 departments remain under an orange alert for heatwave conditions.
A thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Ain, Allier, Ardèche, Doubs, Jura, Loire, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, and Saône-et-Loire departments. The most severe weather is expected during the afternoon and evening. These storms may be accompanied by significant lightning, heavy rainfall, and hail ranging from moderate to large. Wind gusts reaching nearly 100 km/h are also possible in the areas under an orange alert.
Temperatures up to 40°C expected in the Var region
Meanwhile, the heat persists in the southeastern quarter of the country. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 34 and 38°C, with peaks approaching 40°C in the Var department. After another particularly hot night, the cooling will therefore remain limited in the most affected areas. An orange heatwave warning is in effect for the following departments: Ain, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Ardèche, both Corsican departments, Doubs, Drôme, Isère, Jura, Loire, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, Savoie, Savoie, Vaucluse, and Territoire de Belfort. Temperatures are expected to drop by two to three degrees in other regions, but the heatwave is set to continue in the Southeast over the next few days. In departments also exposed to storms, this transition could be abrupt without immediately bringing a lasting drop in temperatures.
