Heatwave: 20 departments on orange alert, the heat hits France again

France is experiencing another heatwave this Saturday, August 1st. A total of 20 departments are under an orange heatwave warning due to a significant rise in temperatures. The most difficult conditions are expected in the southeast quarter of the country, where the mercury is well above the usual seasonal levels. In the morning, the sky will alternate between cloudy periods and sunny spells from the southwest to the northeast. Sea breezes will bring cloudier skies to the Basque Country and Béarn. From Brittany to Hauts-de-France, as well as along the Mediterranean coast, sunshine will prevail.

A very sunny afternoon with some thunderstorms over the mountains.

Throughout the day, sunshine will prevail across most of the country. The sky will remain slightly more changeable in Alsace, Lorraine, and Franche-Comté, with a slight risk of showers. Clouds will develop over the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, and the mountains of Corsica. These could bring localized showers, or even thunderstorms, to the eastern Pyrenees and the Southern Alps. A light mistral wind will also blow in the southeast, with gusts reaching up to 40 km/h.

Temperatures of up to 40°C expected in the Southeast

Minimum temperatures will range from 10°C to 15°C in Brittany, north of the Belgian border, and part of the Auvergne region. They will reach 15°C to 20°C in most other areas and will already be between 20°C and 25°C in the Southeast. In the afternoon, the heat will become very intense in the Mediterranean regions. Maximum temperatures will generally reach 31°C to 35°C in the Southeast and locally peak between 36°C and 40°C from Languedoc to the Var. In the rest of France, temperatures will most often vary between 26°C and 32°C. Only the areas near the English Channel and the tip of Brittany will maintain more moderate values, between 20°C and 23°C.

The main temperatures expected this Saturday

The forecast highs are 22°C in Brest, 21°C in Cherbourg, 26°C in Rennes and Biarritz, 27°C in Lille and Nantes, 28°C in Dijon, 29°C in Paris, Tours, and Clermont-Ferrand, 30°C in Strasbourg, Nice, and Nancy, 31°C in Bordeaux, 32°C in Lyon and Toulouse, 33°C in Limoges, 35°C in Perpignan, and 36°C in Marseille and Ajaccio. This heatwave has once again placed 20 departments on orange alert. Authorities recommend limiting physical exertion during the hottest hours, staying hydrated, and paying particular attention to the elderly, young children, and the most vulnerable.
