Spain is now checking travelers arriving from Italy

Spain launched border controls at its ports and airports on Saturday, August 8, for travelers arriving from Italy. This decision is a direct response to measures taken by Rome, which recently began screening third-country nationals arriving from Spanish territory. The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed the implementation of this mirrored measure, which signals a deterioration in relations between the two Mediterranean countries.

Time-limited checks

The temporary controls will remain in place until September 7th. This deadline, announced Friday by the Spanish authorities, strictly limits the duration of these exceptional checks at points of entry into the country.

The Spanish measure is a direct response to the Italian policy targeting travelers from third countries transiting through Spain. Madrid fully embraces this policy of reciprocity in the face of restrictions imposed by its European neighbor.
