The French labor market is deteriorating. In the second quarter of 2026, the unemployment rate reached 8,3%, marking a sixth consecutive increase. This level had not been seen since 2020, a year marked by the health crisis. France now has 2,7 million unemployed people actively seeking work, 62.000 more than in the previous quarter.
A deterioration that is taking hold.
The figures published this Thursday reflect a significant trend that has been developing for the past year and a half. The unemployment rate rose by 0,1 percentage point in July, reaching 3,0%. This increase reflects the persistent difficulties the French economy faces in creating jobs amidst slowing growth.
The only positive note in this otherwise bleak picture is that the Aude region saw a decrease in unemployment at the end of the second quarter, breaking with several months of increases. This localized decline contrasts sharply with the national trend, which continues to worsen quarter after quarter.
