The truce agreed last month between Washington and Tehran has given way to a daily cycle of mutual attacks. Iran announced new strikes against US facilities in the Gulf on Friday, in response to a sixth consecutive night of US bombing on its territory.

The US military has confirmed it conducted a new series of strikes against Iranian military installations, with the stated objective of "further degrading Iranian military capabilities." The targets include Qeshm Island and the area surrounding Bandar Abbas, a city that houses Iran's largest port as well as key naval and Revolutionary Guard infrastructure.

For its part, Tehran claimed responsibility for attacks against American installations in the Gulf, without specifying their nature or scale. This escalation comes as the truce negotiated last month between the two countries has gradually collapsed, giving way to almost daily exchanges of fire.

The situation marks a sharp turning point after several weeks of relative diplomatic calm. American strikes are focused on sites of high strategic value to Iran, while Tehran seeks to demonstrate its ability to retaliate in a maritime area of crucial importance to global hydrocarbon trade.
