Basel-based giant Roche is making a big splash across the Atlantic. The Swiss pharmaceutical group has announced a massive investment plan of $50 billion (approximately 40,5 billion Swiss francs) in the United States over the next five years. This strong signal confirms the laboratory's strategic shift toward the American market, already a key part of its business. This expansion program aims to create more than 12 jobs, including nearly 000 during the construction phase alone. Roche, which already employs more than 6 people in the United States, intends to consolidate its industrial and scientific presence across several states, from Indiana to California, including Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and New Jersey.
Gene therapies, weight-loss drugs and artificial intelligence
The colossal investment will cover both the modernization of existing sites and the construction of new centers, particularly in the fields of gene therapy, blood sugar monitoring, new-generation weight-loss drugs, and research driven by artificial intelligence. A cutting-edge R&D center will be created in Massachusetts, dedicated to cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic pathologies, while an 84 m² factory is to be built to produce new weight-loss treatments. Another site, still confidential, will soon be announced to complete this industrial and technological network.
The United States is now an export base for Roche
Another key element: Roche expects that once all the new capacities are operational, the United States will become a net export center for its products. The country, historically a major importer of medicines, could thus transform into a strategic platform for the global distribution of the group's portfolio, particularly in diagnostics and advanced biotechnologies. By focusing on a stronger physical presence and cutting-edge technologies, Roche clearly intends to preempt the future of global pharmaceuticals, and to make the United States the beating heart of its therapeutic innovation.
