His latest feature film, Megalopolis, a titanic project financed with his own funds, has deeply divided critics since its presentation at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Far from being offended, the director welcomed this distinction with biting irony, denouncing Hollywood's timidity.
On Instagram, Coppola responded with assumed phlegm: "In a world where art is judged like a wrestling competition, I have chosen not to follow the rules of an industry terrified of risk."
By financing Megalopolis alone to the tune of $120 million, the filmmaker took all the risks to make this futuristic fresco inspired by ancient Rome. Despite its extraordinary visual and philosophical ambitions, the film received a mixed reception. Some critics praised it as an avant-garde masterpiece, while others called it an "artistic shipwreck."
In addition to the Razzie for Worst Director, Megalopolis earned Jon Voight a Worst Supporting Actor nod, while Dakota Johnson was voted Worst Actress for Madame Web, which was named Worst Picture of the Year.
