Gironde: The Minister of Ecology criticizes the industrial salmon farm project

The Minister for Ecological Transition, Monique Barbut, expressed her opposition to the salmon farming project led by the company Pure Salmon in Verdon-sur-Mer, Gironde. During a hearing at the Senate, she judged that this industrial project was based on insufficiently solid foundations.

The project plans to produce 10,000 tonnes of salmon per year in a closed-loop system, creating several hundred jobs. However, the minister questioned its environmental soundness, arguing that it was not a true aquaculture operation but rather a tank-based production requiring significant energy and resource inputs.

The project is still subject to administrative procedures.
Despite this stance, the final decision will depend on ongoing regulatory procedures. The project has already received a favorable opinion from the public inquiry and must still be reviewed by the relevant authorities before any potential prefectural authorization.

Several environmental organizations also oppose this project, citing risks to the local ecosystem. For its part, the company defends a project it presents as strategic for food sovereignty, assuring that its environmental impact will be controlled.
