The exchange can be reciprocal and simultaneous, when two families occupy their respective homes on the same dates. Some platforms also offer a points system that allows users to host travelers for a specific period and then use the earned credits to travel elsewhere later. Participants typically pay an annual membership fee to the platform, but the cost remains significantly lower than the price of several nights in a hotel or a vacation rental during peak season.

This practice is particularly appealing to families with children, who can enjoy a kitchen, several bedrooms, a washing machine, and sometimes a garden without the high cost of a large rental. However, house swapping relies on a relationship of trust and requires careful preparation. Occupants must establish rules regarding cleaning, pets, fragile items, energy consumption, and the use of appliances, while also verifying their home insurance. It is also advisable to prioritize verified profiles, consult previous reviews, and have extensive discussions with the other family before departure. When well-organized, this type of vacation allows for longer and more comfortable travel, while significantly reducing accommodation costs.
