Hospital on-call duties: pay increase for university doctors announced

The Minister of Health has announced an increase in on-call pay for university hospital physicians, in order to better recognize their commitment. This measure specifically targets night and weekend periods, during which these doctors must remain available to respond to emergencies.

The maximum compensation for on-call duty will be raised from €280 to €500 in the most demanding situations. The precise amount of the increase will be adjusted by the management of university hospitals, based in particular on the frequency and duration of interventions.

A correction of a previous imbalance

This pay increase comes after a reform implemented in 2025 that had already improved the conditions of hospital practitioners, but did not fully benefit university physicians due to their specific status. These physicians combine clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities.

The cost of the measure is estimated at €18,4 million per year. The government intends to correct a disparity in treatment and better value particularly demanding activities, such as emergency interventions or operations related to organ donation.
