The National Rally is maintaining pressure on Sébastien Lecornu as the 2027 budget review approaches. Jordan Bardella stated on Monday that his party was not ruling out "anything" at this stage, including a censure of the government, and promised to present its own proposals for savings in the coming days.
"For now, we are not ruling anything out," declared the president of the National Rally. He asserted his intention to carry out "the biggest cleanup operation of public finances" and indicated that the party would soon unveil its proposals before definitively setting its position during the budget debate.
Lecornu under threat of censorship
This warning comes as Sébastien Lecornu convenes his government to prepare a particularly delicate budget bill. The executive branch must finance several billion euros in new spending, notably for Defense, the Interior, Justice, Education, and Agriculture, while simultaneously attempting to contain the public deficit.
The Prime Minister is considering measures such as slowing down certain social spending, including reforms to sick leave, reduced reimbursements for medications, and a partial de-indexing of pensions. These measures are already fueling opposition to his plan. Jean-Luc Mélenchon has announced that La France Insoumise (LFI) will censure the government, while the National Rally (RN) prefers to maintain the suspense for now.
Faced with the risk of a deadlock until the presidential election, Sébastien Lecornu is advocating for a temporary budget for the first half of 2027, which could then be amended by the next majority. However, with threats of a censure vote from several opposition parties, the budget's adoption is already shaping up to be one of the key political power struggles of the autumn.
