Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred is once again appearing before a French court in a case of alleged rape dating back to 2018 near Saint-Tropez. The trial opened this Monday before the Var Assize Court in Draguignan, where the 40-year-old artist strongly denies the accusations made against him by a young woman he met in a nightclub in the seaside resort.
According to the complainant, the incident occurred in a hotel room after an evening of drinking. She claims she was sexually assaulted after agreeing to go with the singer for a drink. Saad Lamjarred, on the other hand, maintains that the encounter was consensual. In 2021, the French justice system upheld his referral to trial despite the prosecution's recommendation that the case be dismissed.
A new legal case for the Moroccan star
Hugely popular in the Arab world, Saad Lamjarred is already facing several legal proceedings for similar offenses in France, Morocco, and the United States. In 2023, he was sentenced to six years in prison by the Paris Assize Court for the rape of a young woman he met in a Parisian nightclub in 2016. The singer appealed this conviction and is currently out on bail.
The trial in Draguignan, initially scheduled for late 2025, was postponed for medical reasons. At the plaintiff's request, the proceedings are being held behind closed doors to protect her privacy. This new court appearance further damages the image of the Moroccan star, several of whose concerts and partnerships have already been canceled in recent years due to the accusations against him.
