Vučić announces his resignation and early elections in Serbia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday that he would step down in the coming weeks, paving the way for early presidential and parliamentary elections after months of anti-government protests.

In power for thirteen years, Vučić made this statement at a rally of his supporters in Belgrade. His second and final presidential term was originally scheduled to end in mid-2027.

This announcement comes after nearly a year and a half of student and citizen protests against the government, sparked by the collapse of a train station roof in Novi Sad in November 2024, a disaster that claimed sixteen lives. Protesters are denouncing corruption and demanding political reforms, as well as early elections.

A few days ago, students gathered in Novi Sad to pay tribute to the victims of the accident and renew their call for early elections. Another demonstration is planned for Sunday in Kraljevo, in the southeast of the country.

"I will only be president for a few weeks, then I will resign," Vučić told his supporters.

His departure will mark the end of a long period of political dominance in Serbia. The upcoming elections are expected to be a major test for the ruling power, as popular protests have intensified in recent months and the opposition hopes to translate this momentum into electoral success.
