The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, expressed her gratitude to Donald Trump following the conclusion of an oil agreement between the two countries, which observers describe as coercive.
On Wednesday, September 2, Delcy Rodriguez spoke from Caracas to thank U.S. President Donald Trump for the oil deal reached between Washington and Caracas. The Venezuelan leader justified her position by citing the “well-being of the Venezuelan people,” stating that the increase in oil production would serve the interests of the population.
The agreement, announced by Trump last Friday, provides for the United States to take majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of the Caribbean country’s oil reserves. An operation of considerable scale, placing a decisive share of Venezuelan natural resources under American influence.
These official thanks do not convince everyone. Vicente Ulive Schnell, writer and observer of Venezuelan politics, bluntly assesses the situation: “This all looks like coercion by Trump.” This interpretation raises questions about the real room for maneuver Caracas had in this negotiation.
