The Taiwanese presidency strongly condemned China after the expulsion of a journalist from New York Times, following an interview conducted with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, according to reports on Sunday.
The incident comes amid already tense relations between Taipei and Beijing, marked by persistent disagreements over the island's sovereignty and regular friction over diplomatic and media activities related to Taiwan.
The media group involved, the New York Times Co., did not immediately provide details of the exact circumstances of the journalist's expulsion, but confirmed that it followed the publication or preparation of an interview with the Taiwanese head of state.
Taiwanese authorities denounced the attack as an attack on press freedom and an attempt to intimidate foreign media covering the island. China, for its part, did not immediately respond publicly to these accusations.
The case is part of a series of sensitive diplomatic and media episodes involving relations between Beijing and international media operating in the region.
