Four years after the fall of Mariupol to Russian forces, the Ukrainian Azov Regiment claims to have regained the initiative by targeting Russian positions and supply lines around its home city. Having become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance after the 2022 siege, the group has regrouped and vows to intensify its operations.
The Battle of Mariupol, which ended in May 2022 after months of fighting, marked a heavy defeat for the unit. Hundreds of Azov fighters were killed or captured during the fall of the strategic port city on the Sea of Azov.
Since then, the unit has been rebuilt and integrated into a larger military structure. According to its leaders, it now focuses part of its efforts on the areas surrounding Mariupol, with the aim of disrupting Russian capabilities in this occupied region.
Azov's operations are part of a broader Ukrainian military strategy to target Russian logistical infrastructure. Kyiv is particularly focused on disrupting the movement of troops, equipment, and ammunition to combat zones in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Unit leaders believe its recent reinforcement will allow it to conduct more operations in the future. They present these actions as a response to the occupation of Mariupol, which has become one of the most prominent symbols of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
As the conflict continues for a fifth year, Mariupol retains strong strategic and symbolic value for both sides. For the Azov fighters, the city remains central to their identity and military commitment, despite the loss of their former base in the early stages of the war.
