Ukraine takes a decisive step: the EU gives its green light to the opening of the first accession negotiations

Ukraine has taken a major step towards European integration. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced on Thursday that all European Union member states had approved the opening of discussions on the first group of chapters in the accession negotiations between Ukraine and Moldova.

“Excellent news,” the Ukrainian prime minister declared on social media, hailing it as another step toward her country’s strategic goal. According to her, this decision brings Kyiv even closer to future accession to the European Union.

Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, has confirmed that it has begun the necessary preparations for the formal opening of negotiations. The initial chapters will focus on the rule of law, democratic institutions, and the governance standards required by the Union.

European authorities described the decision as a strong signal of unity and determination. The Cypriot presidency indicated that it would continue its efforts to finalize the technical discussions necessary for the official launch of this new phase of the accession process.

This development comes after a significant shift in relations between Kyiv and Budapest. Earlier on Wednesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced an agreement with Ukraine on the rights of the Hungarian minority living in the west of the country. This dispute had been one of the main obstacles to Hungarian support for Ukraine's European ambitions for several years.

While the opening of these initial chapters does not guarantee swift accession, it nonetheless marks a major political step for Kyiv. The process of joining the European Union remains long and complex, but this decision demonstrates the continued support of member states for Ukraine's candidacy despite the geopolitical and economic challenges facing the continent.
