A lawsuit filed in US court accuses the president's administration Donald Trump of illegally transmitting confidential information to the Iranian government concerning Iranian nationals who had sought asylum in the United States. The US administration has categorically rejected these accusations.
The lawsuit was filed by lawyers from the Public Citizen Litigation Group, representing the Iranian American Legal Defense Fund. The plaintiffs are seeking, among other things, the appointment of an independent watchdog to oversee the information-sharing practices of U.S. authorities.
According to the complaint, a policy implemented the previous year allowed for the transmission to Iran of confidential data extracted from the immigration files of Iranian asylum seekers. The lawyers argue that this practice could have endangered people who had fled their country to escape persecution.
The complaint highlights that many of the asylum seekers involved are pro-democracy protesters, members of religious minorities, including evangelical Christians, or people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, who are seeking refuge in the United States because of the risks they face in Iran.
The plaintiffs also claim that this policy continued despite the high tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly after the US strikes against Iran the previous year, the repression of protests by Iranian authorities and the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran from the end of February.
The Trump administration, for its part, rejected all of these accusations, denying that it had shared confidential information about asylum seekers with the Iranian government. The case will now be examined by the American justice system, which will be called upon to determine whether the alleged practices actually took place and whether they violate American law.
