Lebanon launches a safety audit of its national airline amid pilots' concerns

Lebanese authorities have undertaken a safety audit of the national airline Middle East Airlines (MEA) after several pilots' organizations expressed concerns about the risks faced by crews in the context of regional conflict.

According to Reuters, representatives of pilots reported that some flights continued to operate near areas affected by airstrikes and military activity, raising questions about the safety conditions of air operations in Lebanon.

Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport remains a vital infrastructure for the country, but its proximity to areas affected by regional tensions is fueling concerns among flight crews.

Pilots' associations have also reportedly met with member companies of the SkyTeam airline alliance to discuss these concerns and assess the safety measures applied to flights serving Beirut.

The Lebanese Civil Aviation Authority has launched a thorough review of MEA's safety procedures. This audit aims to verify that risk assessments, flight routes, and operational protocols comply with international standards in an environment marked by regional instability.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has put in place financial aid for workers in the aviation sector, who have been severely affected by disruptions related to security tensions and the decline in traffic.

MEA remains a strategic player for Lebanon, handling a large portion of the country's international flights. The audit's findings will therefore be closely watched by authorities, partner airlines, and pilot organizations, as flight safety remains a priority in a fragile regional context.
