Poland tightens the screws: phones banned in schools and access to pornography more strictly controlled

The Polish government wants to take a further step in protecting minors from digital abuse. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday his intention to ban the use of mobile phones in primary schools and to strengthen age controls for accessing online pornography.

According to the bill presented by the government, students aged 7 to 15 will no longer be allowed to use their mobile phones on school premises starting September 1st. The ban will apply not only during classes but also during recess.

The text also provides schools with a legal basis to implement phone storage systems during the day. Authorities believe this measure will help improve student concentration and reduce disruptions related to smartphone use.

“We propose banning the use of mobile phones in primary schools during lessons and recess,” said Donald Tusk. The Prime Minister stressed that parents and teachers must have effective tools to guide children’s use of digital technologies.

Poland thus joins several countries that have already adopted similar restrictions. The Netherlands, South Korea, and Italy, in particular, have limited or banned the use of smartphones in schools due to concerns about their impact on attention, behavior, and academic performance.

At the same time, the government wants to introduce stricter age verification rules for accessing pornographic content online. Donald Tusk referred to it as a "civilizational problem," arguing that addiction to digital platforms, games, and social media particularly affects young people and could have lasting consequences for their development and for society as a whole.
