Firearms, LGBT rights, immigration: the US Supreme Court is preparing to rule on explosive issues.

Judges will have to rule on issues related to firearms, LGBT rights, voting rights, and immigration.

Among the most anticipated cases is an appeal against assault rifle bans adopted by certain states. Judges will notably examine appeals concerning laws in Connecticut and Cook County, Illinois, which prohibit these weapons, including AR-15-type rifles.

Gun rights advocates argue that these rifles are protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. Conversely, the authorities who imposed these bans consider AR-15s to be weapons of war frequently used in deadly shootings and terrorist acts.

The high court will also have to examine cases relating to LGBT rights, Republican-backed voting restrictions in Arizona, and a controversial policy of detaining certain convicted immigrants implemented by the Trump administration.

Several lawsuits involving major corporations are also on the docket. The judges will notably hear an appeal from ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy seeking to block a climate-related lawsuit filed in Colorado. They will also examine an antitrust dispute between Epic Games and Apple, as well as a trademark dispute involving PepsiCo.

With a conservative majority of six justices to three, the Supreme Court has profoundly influenced the evolution of American law in recent years. Its future decisions on firearms, individual liberties, and federal policies could have major consequences for American society and fuel debates as the next political elections approach.
