Following Keir Starmer's resignation, the Kremlin does not expect any change in relations between London and Moscow.

The Kremlin stated on Monday that the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer should not alter the UK's policy towards Russia. Moscow believes that London will maintain a hard line, regardless of who succeeds the current head of government.

Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, stating his desire to ensure an orderly transition of power by September to avoid any political instability. His departure will pave the way for a new leader to take the helm of the United Kingdom, which is about to see its seventh Prime Minister in ten years.

Reacting to the announcement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Keir Starmer had never distinguished himself by a willingness to improve relations between London and Moscow. According to him, the British leader had consistently supported maintaining a frozen relationship between the two countries.

“Starmer has done nothing to distinguish himself on the issue of British-Russian relations,” Dmitri Peskov told the press. He added that it was unlikely any British politician would adopt a significantly different position towards Russia in the future.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the United Kingdom has been among Kyiv's main Western supporters, providing significant military, financial, and diplomatic aid. This position has further deteriorated relations between London and Moscow, already strained by several crises over the past decade.

Statements from the Kremlin suggest that Russia does not anticipate any rapprochement with the United Kingdom in the short term, despite the expected change in the British government. For Moscow, London's support for Ukraine remains a central element of British foreign policy and is expected to continue after Keir Starmer's departure.
