The incident began on the morning of Thursday, August 6, when several witnesses reported seeing an apparently abandoned vessel adrift off Owen Beach, near Tacoma. A police marine unit was dispatched to investigate. No human occupants were found on board. However, upon boarding the boat, officers discovered an unusual scene: approximately 30 cats and kittens were roaming freely inside and on the deck. John Correa, Tacoma Police Department's public information officer, described the situation as particularly surprising: "The best way to describe it is that it looked like something out of a Studio Ghibli film." He added, "It was their boat, and they were all going about their business, wandering freely around on board."
Thin and frightened cats
Beyond the unusual nature of the discovery, the condition of several animals quickly alarmed the police. The cats were living in conditions deemed dangerous. Several appeared to be suffering from malnutrition and were particularly fearful. The authorities therefore decided to organize their evacuation. However, the operation could not be carried out immediately. As the boat still belonged to a private individual, the animal control services needed judicial authorization before they could fully intervene on board.
A warrant was obtained to evacuate all the animals
After obtaining a search warrant, teams returned to the boat Friday morning to retrieve all the cats. The operation involved several agencies, including the marine unit, animal protection teams, and forensic technicians. The Tacoma Police Department praised the operation: "Thanks to tremendous teamwork, all the cats and kittens are being safely removed from the boat." The rescued animals were then taken to a shelter for examination and to receive the necessary care.
The boat owner could not be reached
Investigators were able to obtain information regarding the legal owner of the vessel. However, the owner could not be reached at the time of the intervention. Authorities are now trying to determine why approximately 30 cats and kittens were alone on the boat and under what circumstances the vessel came to be adrift without any human presence.
