Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad hospitalized after a hip fracture

The former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir MohamadA 100-year-old man was hospitalized after suffering a hip fracture following a fall at his home, his family announced.

He must remain hospitalized at theNational Institute of Cardiology from Kuala Lumpur for several weeks to receive treatment and be placed under observation, according to a statement from his office.

A major figure in political life MalaysiaMahathir Mohamad is widely credited with transforming the country into an industrial nation during his first long term as Prime Minister between 1981 and 2003. However, he suffers from long-standing heart problems and has been hospitalized several times in recent years, including for coronary bypass surgeries.

He had already been admitted to the hospital last July due to severe fatigue, shortly after a picnic organized to celebrate his 100th birthday. Mahathir served as Prime Minister twice, returning to power in 2018 after leading the opposition to a historic victory. However, his second government collapsed less than two years later amid internal divisions.
